Overview:
Divorce can be a confusing and emotional time for children, leaving them with feelings of uncertainty, sadness, and anxiety. This 8-week hands-on workshop is designed to help children navigate their emotions, understand their changing family dynamics, and build resilience. Through engaging activities, guided discussions, and emotional support, participants will gain the tools they need to cope with their parents' divorce in a healthy and positive way.
Change can be difficult, but children don’t have to go through it alone. This workshop provides a safe space for kids to express their feelings, ask questions, and learn that families come in many different forms—but love remains constant.
Workshop Structure:
Duration: 8 weeks (1 session per week)

Week 1: Understanding Divorce – What’s Happening?
Objective: Help children understand what divorce means, why it happens, and reassure them that it’s not their fault.
Activities: Storytelling about different types of families, open Q&A, and drawing how they feel about family changes.
Week 2: Talking About Feelings – It’s Okay to Feel Sad, Mad, or Confused
Objective: Normalize emotions and give children a safe space to express their thoughts.
Activities: Emotion chart exercise, “Feelings Jar” activity, and a guided group discussion about emotions.
Week 3: Managing Big Feelings – Healthy Ways to Cope
Objective: Teach children simple ways to handle overwhelming emotions like sadness, anger, and anxiety.
Activities: Breathing exercises, calming techniques, and creating a “Coping Toolbox” with strategies they can use at home.
Week 4: Communication Skills – Talking to Parents and Asking Questions
Objective: Encourage children to express their needs and concerns to parents in a healthy way.
Activities: Role-playing conversations with parents, writing letters to express feelings, and practicing “I feel” statements.
Week 5: Families Come in Different Shapes – Redefining What Family Means
Objective: Help children understand that all families are unique and that love remains the foundation.
Activities: Exploring different types of families through stories, creating their “Family Tree of Love,” and a discussion on what family means to them.
Week 6: Changes and New Routines – Adjusting to Two Homes or New Family Dynamics
Objective: Prepare children for changes in their daily lives and routines post-divorce.
Activities: Creating a “Two-House Checklist,” discussing what to expect in both homes, and group storytelling about adapting to change.
Week 7: Dealing with Conflict – When Parents Don’t Get Along
Objective: Help children understand that parents arguing is not their responsibility and teach them how to stay emotionally safe.
Activities: “What’s My Role?” discussion, practicing ways to respond when parents argue, and relaxation exercises.
Week 8: Looking Forward – Building a Happy and Strong Future
Objective: End on a positive note, helping children feel hopeful about their future and their evolving family.
Activities: Vision board creation, sharing personal growth stories, and a closing celebration where kids reflect on what they’ve learned.
